Update on the proposal to amend Directive 2009/148/EC on the protection of workers from the risks arising from occupational exposure to asbestos

On 28 September 2022, the European Commission presented a proposal to amend Directive 2009/148/EC on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to asbestos at work, announcing a series of actions for 2022 and 2023. The main change proposed relates to the modification of the limit value for occupational exposure to asbestos. The proposed modification it's about the reduction of the current limit value by an order of magnitude (from 0.1 fibres/cm3 to 0.01 fibres/cm3 - determined as an 8-hour time-weighted average). The proposal also addresses some aspects directly related to the lowering of the current occupational exposure limit, such as those relating to exposure measurement techniques.
