Industrial hygiene monitoring and assessment in "upstream" oil extraction and treatment facilities

Abstract


The goal of this work was to monitor and quantify the environmental concentration of substances connected to the technological and process characteristics of the monitored site, in order to analyze their actual impact on the health of the working population.

The following groups of substances were monitored during the sampling activity: Aromatic Polycyclic Hydrocarbons, VOCs, Mercaptans, Glycols, Alcohols, Sulphurated Compounds, Metals, Powders, carbon Monoxide and Carbon Dioxide, PCDD / F and PCB and Airborne Nanoparticles, over 100 different pollutants in total. All measurements were made in compliance with the most current accredited sampling methods defined by the NIOSH (ACGIH) and the EPA. Moreover, the processing and the analysis of the data have been executed following to the statistical principles listed in Appendix D of the UNI EN 689: 1997 standard. These results confirm that the use of the best available technologies function to contribute to a significant reduction of the overall environmental impact and consequently result in a reduction of occupational exposure levels to “upstream” plant workers.
